My rating s of a 3.5 because Everybody loves a good apocalypse and I m no exception There was a female lead who, if not exactly capable of kicking ass, was a leading geneticist brains over brawn any day The freaky way the vaccine changed them all was amazing no death causing viruses or flesh eating zombies, yet horrific in its own way.Prison takeovers are the scariest things ever and the author combined it with a post apocalyptic scenario The ever present threat of the convicts getting to our heroine was sufficient to keep me reading.I loved the fact that the author didn t even need to show much violence to keep the readers hooked she just let us imagine what could happen, if they got to her.

Human Instincts lives through its atmosphere and setting Much of it takes place on a post apocalypse Earth, inside the arctic circle, in a tightly locked prison, in the middle of psychopathic prisoners I invite you to try to find something claustrophobic and chilling than this Starting from this setting, Ioana Visan could have chosen to write a total defeat as in I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream or to build a strong character that could resist and manage to escape The author chooses the latter and does it very well, with a strong and well defined female character I have objections regarding the medical issues, but they are not so large and troublesome as to spoil my reading enjoyment.

For a post apocalyptic tale it s kinda light I expected it to be a bit darker However, it has nice shaped characters, good plot and realistic dialogues It was a real pleasure to discover another romanian work not suffocated by metaphors and phantasmagorias And by the way it ends, it could easily support a sequel which I ll be than willingly to buy and read.

Human Instincts by Ioana Visan is an apocalyptic novella unlike any other I ve read The premise is that a global war was finally ended when the losing side released a biological agent over the enemy However, they failed to recognize how quickly the agent would travel into their own population Long before an antidote could be distributed, millions died Quarantine zones were established to enable the human race to continue, but only when the survivors bore children was it learned the antidote itself had teratogenic effects Children were born with a multitude of problems, not least of which was their inability to learn, think progressively or continue the cultural progress enjoyed by the human race up to that time Dr Deanna Nichols was researching a potential cure for the antidote s effects, when her superiors determined there was a small population of non treated, but uninfected humans in a maximum security prison complex north of the Arctic Circle She was dispatched to interview and evaluate the prisoners, as a potential source of unpolluted human sperm donors, to be used to fertilize undisclosed egg donors, who also were apparently unpolluted But is sending a lone woman into a maximum security prison a good idea, even if the fate of the entire human race is at stake Will she succeed in her mission Will the human race be saved Or is this last ditch effort doomed to failure I was very impressed with the author s ability to develop a very interesting and logical apocalyptic scenario I was impressed to a much greater degree when, in the author s bio, it was disclosed that she is Romanian, and she translated the book into English herself One would expect to find typical grammatical errors as a result of the inherent differences between languages, but this book was perfectly translated as far as I could tell The author has a remarkable talent, and presents a compelling story I look forward to seeing her name on future books, knowing they will be well worth the time to read.

I wasn t sure how Visan was going to pull off an apocalyptic novella in only one hundred pages, but she has a gift for writing, and she does it superbly Dr Deanna Nichols was a part of the process of creating the virus that in turn, infected most of mankind If the guilt of that isn t heavy enough, she s not having any luck formulating a cure. The General wants her to go into a prison, where the inmates have unaffected DNA But they have a few stipulations mainly that Deanna come herself and they want some supplies Deanna doesn t want to go because the General believes that it is through their DNA that they can create children that are virus free, their future Deanna wants to save the people now, not just the future But the General doesn t want to waste valuable time with that But, she may not get to do either of them because the inmates are staging a prison break while Deanna is there.I like reading apocalyptic novels, but I haven t quite read one like this It has a very unique and clever premise, with wonderfully developed characters moving it along It s quick paced and I finished it before I knew it I was so engrossed in the story Definitely recommend this one Highly enjoyable

It took me a while to crystallize my opinion on this one, but now I have it First of all, I was expecting to read about a better detailed apocalyptic world, with a stronger scent of death But I guess a virus does not have any smell at all, to satisfy my terror thirst with it Fortunately, I found enough terror for my taste in Dr.Nichols decisions and between the prison s walls Second thing, the novella is very to the point and, at the same time, the characters are very well shaped Such a rare combination Third thing, I had a great time reading Human Instincts as I was fully connected to the story line, eager to find out what will happen next.

PDF version via author for honest reviewDr Deanna Nicholas is the only surviving geneticist working for the General after the war Her boss died, but before he did they were the ones to end the war by making a virus that killed There was a vaccine made, but it had very adverse affects on those that were given it Deanna has morals and ethics, which her senior geneticist did not She doesn t think it s right to kill the innocent just for the good of science like he did There is no way to make children who are not tainted by this vaccine s side effects, so the world is headed to ruin Or is it The General gets a message from a prison that was kept secure all these years and also has inmates that were not given the vaccine, so are not affected by it The only hope for humanity is to test these inmates and see if they really are unaffected and could maybe help repopulate the world Deanna goes to the old prison herself for medical assessments and to bring them supplies She takes a huge risk doing this, after all these are inmates and even worse, inmates who have not seen a woman in many years and who are the most violent of inmates She has to put her trust in Tom, the inmate who seems to have the best background of them all and is most willing to try and help and keep her safe Will the inmates really be unaffected like they claim or will she have risked her life and made an extremely long trip for nothing Will she survive the stay in the prison with all these male, dangerous inmates to even find out if they are affected or not And what if they are unaffected, who can partner with them that is female and unaffected herself Is this one big bust of an idea and trip and money Deanna is willing to risk it all to find out.I must say that at first I was a bit lost and confused in the book, but after the first chapter or so it all came together and I could jump in with both feet This book has a very good and different plot line than others I have read or seen It also has great characters, my favorite being Deanna and Tom I thought it really seemed to move right along and I was happy and anxious to come back to it if I had to stop reading I couldn t wait to see what happened next to Deanna as she dove into this mission There are some twists and turns too, that really make the book I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes science, mystery, or just a great read It was such a unique plot and book that it was made all the better This is a truly talented author and I would read of her books anytime.4 5 Stars

Review I received this book in return for a honest review from the author Dr Deanna Nichols is a researching working on a cure for the people infected with the virus that wiped out most of the planet She is also responsible for the virus that was used to end a brutal war, feels guilty so she s trying to find a cure since the vaccine that was created has some negative affects Deanna used to work for Dr Larsen but he passed away, he didn t have a problem killing people in the name of science but Deanna does The option to obtain untainted DNA comes up when the General is contacted by a maximum security prison they didn t know was still active reached out looking for supplies The General sends Deanna in to the prison with only a guard a former war leader who s also a criminal in the prison He thinks that the only want to save man kind is through a new generation of children and by using the criminals with the uninfected DNA they could do just that However Deanna wants to save the already infected people, but under the orders of the general she enters the prison However her time is short lived, the criminals are staging a break, and if the former war leader can t save her life, all could be lost forever I was really surprised by this book I m always a little nervous with the whole Apocalyptic stuff, but it was surprisingly very good The characters are well written, Deanna comes off as a the kind of woman who made a mistake and is willing to risk it all to fix it The story is face paced but full of entertainment, not a dull moment to be found Your instantly drawn in, wanting to know I finished it in one sitting, because I just had to know I loved the ending it just left me with a smile and wanting I found it unique and full of twists and turns.

This was a really interesting read.I loved the writing Ioana Visan has impeccable writing Her words draw you in The characters are well thought out and you can definitely feel what is going on with them There were a few questions that I had but most were answered. The one thing that made this a hard read was although I enjoy apocalyptic reads, this one had a lot to do about the military But it really didn t was the weird thing But the fact that Deanna is a geneticist basically working for the military not really but sort of and then has to go to a locked tight prison to save the world Well, it all sounds fabulous but for some reason it just didn t get me I honestly think though that Ioana did a fabulous job of writing this story and that the only reason I didn t like it was because it was not my cup of tea.And Even though I didn t love this, I m very curious where these characters are going to go next It ends on a cliff hanger and made me want to know what is going to happen to these people and importantly the population.I completely recommend this to anyone that enjoys apocalyptic but with a military edge At 100 pages it is well worth the read, especially if you enjoy those genres.
